More than 500 thousand signatures for the bill limiting trade on Sundays

In the Sejm, Speaker Marek Kuchciński met with representatives of the Legislative Initiative Committeewhich includes NSZZ "Solidarity", social, Catholic, workers' and employers' organizations. A project has been submitted to the Speaker of the Sejm a bill restricting trade on Sundays along with more than 518,000 citizen signatures. During the meeting, Marshal Kuchciński declared his support for the project "which is a success of cooperation of all social groups and enjoys the approval of trade unions, associations and trade employers' organizations".

According to the bill, the Sunday trading ban would apply to most retail establishments, including, but not limited to, stores, stands, stalls, wholesalers, building material stores, and mail-order houses. The provisions would also cover: franchisees, entrepreneurs operating under an "agency agreement" (excluding gas stations), entrepreneurs operating under an "agency agreement (excluding gas stations), door-to-door and door-to-door traders.

Excluded from the trade ban would be, among others, gas stations, bakeries, stores located at train stations and airports, and newsstands. Small local stores would also be allowed to open on Sundays, provided that their owner is behind the counter. The draft also assumes establishment of seven so called commercial Sundays per year. Stores will be open e.g. on Sundays preceding Christmas, Easter and in periods when sales are organized.
