Polish Sejm calls for a halt to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline

At today's meeting, MPs passed a resolution calling for a halt to NS2 construction.

"The Sejm of the Republic of Poland, out of solidarity with our Central European neighbors threatened by Russian expansionism, including Ukraine in particular, calls on the European Union and its member states, including first and foremost the Federal Republic of Germany, as our ally in NATO and partner in the European Union, to withdraw any support for the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and to take steps to immediately and effectively stop its construction," the House stated.

"We call for this in the name of respect for the values on which the European Union is based, in the name of solidarity with Ukraine and care for stability and security in Europe, as well as to increase the resilience of the Union to pressure from Russia," the MPs wrote. The parliament also called on the United States to maintain and expand sanctions against entities participating in the construction of the gas pipeline.

MEPs stressed in the document adopted by the vote that the investment realized at the bottom of the Baltic Sea is a tool to finance Russia's imperial expansion. They also listed Russia's acts of armed aggression: against Georgia in 2008 and against Ukraine since 2014, as well as the illegal secession of Transnistria from Moldova.

"The Russian Federation has been exerting massive military pressure on Ukraine this spring, threatening the outbreak of a major armed conflict on the borders of Poland and the European Union. Nord Stream 2, by enabling Russia to forego gas transit through Ukrainian territory to its main consumers, including the Federal Republic of Germany, will open the way for Russia to launch a large-scale military assault on Ukraine without the risk of incurring the costs of interrupting the transit as a result of military actions," the Sejm said in the adopted resolution.

MEPs also mentioned the murders of political opponents and acts of terrorism carried out by Russia on the territory of the European Union, the threat to the life of imprisoned Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny and Russian support for the regime of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus.

"We express our conviction that acceptance of the continuation of the Nord Stream 2 project in the above-described circumstances is a consent to the conduct by the Russian Federation of a policy based on violating international standards, human rights, violating the integrity of neighboring countries and exerting pressure on the countries of the European Union and NATO," - the MPs stated.
