Bronisław Marian Niemkiewicz, a distinguished independence activist, has passed away

jaroslaw.pl: Bronisław Marian Niemkiewicz - Honorary Citizen of the Town of Jarosław, Town Council Councillor of the first term in 1990-1994, for many years an activist of the Trade Union NSZZ "Solidarity" of the Przemysl Land, passed away.

Bronisław Marian Niemkiewicz was born on 20 July 1925 in Kamionka Strumiłłowa near Lviv. There, he attended an elementary school and the Kornel Ujejski middle school, which was closed down after the Soviet invasion. He continued his education in a Soviet ten-year school. Since the outbreak of World War II he joined the underground activity.

In October 1942 he took the oath in the AK, he received the pseudonym "Brona"; in 1943 he was sworn in to the Diversion Management of the AK (pseudonym "Siwy"), he took part in sabotage and intelligence actions, fights with UPA and new authorities.

Graduated from the Polonia High School in Gdańsk, at the same time an employee of the Gdańsk Post Office; in 1947-1951 studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Wrocław, member of the Catholic Revival Association, chief economist of the Municipal Enterprise, forced to take early retirement in 1984.

From September 1980 he was an advisor to the "S" Trade Union Committee in Jarosław, a member of the Committee of Municipal Employees, chairman of the Interregional Commission for Self-Government, a member of the Network of Leading Workplaces. After December 13, 1981, he was repeatedly interrogated. He founded the Chaplaincy of Working People in Jarosław, and organized patriotic celebrations. From 1989, he was the chairman of the Jarosław Land Committee (KO) and vice-chairman of the Voivodship Committee (KO) in Przemyśl.

He co-organized the first parliamentary elections on June 4, 1989 and the first local government elections on May 27, 1990. He was a councillor of the Jarosław City Council of the first term in 1990-94, and was also a delegate to the Local Government Assembly in Przemyśl.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the restoration of local government structures and the development of the town, on May 6, 1994, the Jarosław Town Council awarded the late Bronisław Niemkiewicz the title of Honorary Citizen of Jarosław. In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant in the Polish Army. He was a member of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers and the Association of Poles Damaged by the Third Reich. In 2010 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of Poland.

The farewell ceremony was attended by Marek Kuchciński, Deputy Speaker of the Polish Parliament.
