Train for European solidarity

On February 17, the Speaker of the Sejm Marek Kuchcinski met with the head of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament) and Prime Minister of Saxony Stanislaw Tillich. - This is my first visit to Poland as the President of the Bundesrat. I am very pleased that during all today's meetings the good relations between Poland and Germany were emphasized. I will take with me the impression that we are nice guests here - Tillich began the meeting. He also called the transfer of two valuable pieces of furniture, works of art lost during the Second World War, to the King Jan III Palace Museum in Wilanów an expression of normal, positive relations. The politicians agreed on the concept of a trans-European railroad line Paris - Kiev, which could run through, among others, the connection between Dresden and Wrocław - changed from a regional to a long-distance one. Marshal Kuchciński considered it a good idea to connect Europe on the infrastructural level, on the line of a great railroad route. He recalled that in 2004, when we joined the European Union, he was the first MP from the 27 member states to cross its eastern border. At that time, he presented the Ukrainians with a Union flag and a border pole with wishes that it be driven into Lugansk. - The road is quite far, but the Lugansk - Pyrenees rail route is worthy of support - he added. Another topic, quite important for both sides, was the refugee problem. - Living in Przemysl, 8 kilometers from the Schengen border, I have a chance to observe the situation from different perspectives. One million Ukrainians is an unnoticeable number for people in the region. The fear is rather directed at refugees from a different cultural background - The Speaker argued. Tillich, meanwhile, spoke about the open arms policy, which is coming to an end. About the fact that no one in Germany compares integration with refugees anymore to the integration from the time of German reunification. - The current asylum laws give a material incentive to come. An Albanian who spends 5 months in our country will get more money than he would earn at home in 10 years. And this should be changed - stated the Prime Minister. He went on to talk about the growing awareness of the German public. - It's incredible how the perception of immigrants and their ability to integrate has changed in the last few months. If I had said a year ago that we hadn't gotten 100,000 immigrants integrated, it would have been political death for me - he argued. - Now I know that we should not lecture Eastern European countries and accuse them of being unreliable. No Albanian can get through Przemyśl to Saxony, because the Schengen border protects them. It should work the same way in Greece. Nevertheless, we want refugees to say when they return home: "They treated us well". - he added. - I hope that European solidarity will stand the test it is currently being put to. And the trans-European train via Wroclaw and Dresden will only strengthen it.and - Kuchciński concluded. It seems that Stanislaw Tilich will come back to Poland in April, because he was invited by the Speaker of the Sejm to the celebrations of the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. - This is sure to be something wonderful - predicted the President.
