17 August 2012 was the 92nd anniversary of the Battle of Zadwór, one of the most important battles in the Polish-Bolshevik war, which went down in history as "Polish Thermopylae". The blood sacrifice of 318 young Lviv defenders prevented the city from falling prey to the Bolshevik Army of Budyonny. For more than ten years now, the Polish Society for the Protection of Military Graves in Lwów (PTOnGW) with the organizational and logistic support of the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Lwów has been organizing anniversary celebrations.
This year's celebrations were attended, apart from the representatives of the institution with Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv J. Drozd, among others, by: Vice-Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland M. Kuchciński, Senator of the Republic of Poland Ł. Abgarowicz, Secretary of the CPRWiM A.K. Kunert, representative of the Office of the Council for Foreign Affairs and Development J. Polańczyk, delegations of several Polish municipalities and cities. The Ukrainian side was represented by I. Sagan (Lviv Regional State Administration), P. Chobzej (Lviv Regional Council), the mayor of Zadwór and representatives of Busko District Administration. A dignified setting for the ceremony was provided by scouts from the "Czarna Trzynastka" (Black Thirteen) scout group from Przemyśl and from the Podkarpackie Riflemen's Association.
In his speech, Deputy Marshal M. Kuchcinski pointed out the importance of the Battle of Zadwór for saving Poland and Europe from Bolshevism. The Marshal thanked the organizers and all guests for continuing the multigenerational memory and passing it on to young generations. In all of the speeches, including those by P. Chobzej and I. Sagan, the theme of the joint sacrifice of blood made by Poles and Ukrainians in defense of their native lands against the Bolshevik invasion recurred in virtually all the speeches.
Minister Kunert acquainted nearly 400 participants (representatives of the Polish community in Lviv and compatriots from Poland) with the history of this place and its unique position in the historical memory of the Polish nation in the pre-war period. An important moment of the official part of the ceremony was the awarding of the Medal of the Guardian of Places of National Remembrance by Minister A. Kunert to the President of the Polish Association of National Remembrance Jan Franczuk.
