Warsaw, 31 August 2012
Thirty-two years ago, Poles defied a system based on lies, violence and foreign domination.
On August 31, they forced the communist regime to make concessions that proved to be the beginning of the road to freedom. The great social movement, which united the vast majority of Polish society, showed Europe and the world how good can triumph over evil.
Today we celebrate the anniversary of the creation of "Solidarity", not only to honour all to whom we owe the regained independence. We recall this great victory in order to say that the construction of a free and democratic, prosperous and solidary Poland continues. We encounter obstacles on this road, but the memory of August 1980 convinces us that overcoming them is possible.
On the anniversary of the Gdañsk, Szczecin and Jastrzêbie Agreements, which restored faith in the reconstruction of a free country, but also on the eve of the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, which showed how fragile peace can be built on acquiescence to iniquity, we call for unity of all those who hold dear the ideas of freedom, justice, commitment to Christian values, to their own country and national community.
