Today we bid farewell to His Eminence Cardinal Marian Jaworski, one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary Catholic Church in Poland and Ukraine.
We say farewell in Lubaczow, because this city has become an exceptional place in the diverse and great priestly mission of Fr. It was in Lubaczow that this closest collaborator and at the same time great friend of John Paul II became in 1984 bishop and apostolic administrator of the Polish part of the archdiocese of Lwow, which remained within the borders of the country after the Second World War. It was in this post-war capital of the archbishops expelled from Lvov that Bishop Marian Jaworski carried out his unique pastoral work. And it was from here that in 1991, already as archbishop, the Metropolitan of Lwow, he set out for Lwow to begin the great and historic work of resurrecting the ancient metropolis of Lwow and the whole Latin Church on the territory of present-day Ukraine from its ruins.
The life of Cardinal Jaworski, called by Cardinal Dziwisz 'a witness of difficult history', was a great 'silent' work for the Church and Homeland. He was an outstanding philosopher, the founder of the Polish school of philosophy of religion and many fundamental scientific works.
In 2017, "in recognition of distinguished services for the reconstruction of religious life in the Eastern Borderlands and the deepening of ecumenical dialogue, for scientific achievements in the field of philosophy and theology," President Andrzej Duda decorated Cardinal Marian Jaworski with the Order of the White Eagle.
Today we bid farewell to an excellent pastor, Honorary Citizen of the City, the most outstanding in the history of this ancient city. We bid farewell to the defender of Christianity in the difficult times of the People's Republic of Poland.
I would like to express my gratitude to Providence that on my way of life I could meet many times Cardinal Marian Jaworski.
I extend my deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased and all his loved ones. May the good Lord take care of him.
Honor His Memory!
