The security of the European Union's external borders was the main topic of talks between Sejm Speaker Marek Kuchcinski and Greek Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos.
- Security is a key word that applies to all areas of our activity, so as a parliament we are committed to strengthening security. We must have a strong army and make up for the lost time when we were one element of the communist world. We lived in zones and were not allowed to cross borders. The result of this is the poor state of our infrastructure - said the Speaker. According to Marek Kuchciński the new Via Carpatia transport route will become the foundation of safety. - The cooperation from the Baltic Sea to Greece is an obligation and I will encourage parliamentarians to contact Greek MPs - said Kuchciński.
- Within NATO it is necessary to implement a 360-degree policy - emphasized the minister. He also recalled the words of President Andrzej Duda, who during his visit to Greece said that there is no freedom without security.
- We have managed to stop the migratory wave from Turkey to Greece," Kammenos said. - Moreover, it seems that the war in Syria is coming to an end. Safe zones are being created in the southern part where refugees will be able to return. If this was successful, we could close the gate that opened for illegal refugees, he concluded.
The Marshal emphasized that he looks at Europe in terms of uniting East and West. In the case of our countries the matter is easier, because Poland and Greece are connected by common values and historical ties. Greece was also the first country to recognize Poland as independent and this year we will celebrate the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Minister Kammenos recalled the figure of Jerzy Ivanov-Szajnowicz, who before his execution at the hands of the Gestapo shouted "Long live Greece, long live Poland".
