Marek Kuchciński President of the Polish-Hungarian Parliamentary Group

If a Pole and a Hungarian are two pals, then Marek Kuchciński and the President of the Hungarian Parliament László Kövér are living examples of this proverb. The Polish Sejm has just established bilateral groups for cooperation with the Carpathian countries. One of them is the Polish-Hungarian one, which will be chaired by an MP from Podkarpacie.

The intensity of Kövér's and Kuchcinski's contacts at the level of parliamentary diplomacy meant that the brotherhood between the two countries gained real strength in international politics.

Last year President Andrzej Duda awarded the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly László Kövér with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his outstanding contribution to the development of the Polish-Hungarian parliamentary cooperation. This is the result of many years of joint work of the previous Marshal of the Sejm Marek Kuchciński and László Kövér. The two have met officially almost 30 times. These are dozens of visits, hundreds of hours of talks, many joint projects and arrangements. The dimension of these relations is not only symbolic, but above all practical.

Today's foreign policy, building a strong position in the world requires the ability to create alliances on many levels. Modern diplomacy is not only the contacts of presidents, government representatives, but also the legislature. Marek Kuchciński in 2017 led to the signing of a strategic partnership agreement, providing, among other things, for enhanced parliamentary cooperation between Poland and Hungary.

The common voice of Poland, Hungary and the entire Visegrad Group has started to sound louder and louder, making it easier to convince the European Union of our values and vision.

- Polish-Hungarian relations are a phenomenon. Our cooperation is noncommittal but effective," Kuchciński emphasizes.

We saw the effects of this cooperation and its effectiveness in 2018, when the Hungarian Parliament passed a resolution of support for Poland in the face of pressure from Brussels. It appealed to the Hungarian government not to support proposals that would limit the exercise of Poland's fundamental rights arising from its membership in the European Union. And indeed, Viktor Orbán stood up for Poland during the heated disputes inside the EU negotiations.

In receiving the award, László Kövér acknowledged that it was not only the most valuable distinction of his career, but also a commitment to the future of an entire generation to remain worthy of the historical legacy that has been marked for a thousand years by Polish-Hungarian friendship. - Even in the most difficult conditions of the 20th century, our nations have always borne witness to the fact that the Polish-Hungarian friendship is not just a myth, but a force transforming reality. It was so not only during the Second World War, but also during the clash called the Miracle on the Vistula, it was so in 1956, it was so also in 1980 after the formation of the Solidarity movement fighting for freedom, which was a historical experience that influenced the political start of the Fidesz generation as much as it shaped my personal fate," said Kövér.

According to Marek Kuchciński, we are both messengers and creative continuators of the great cause that began a thousand years ago. We continue the work and traditions of ancient dynasties - the Piasts, the Arpads, the Andegawens, the Jagiellons and the Batory family. We are the heirs of our compatriots from the period of the Spring of Nations and the interwar cooperation between the Republic of Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary as well as Poles and Hungarians helping each other during World War II and in 1956.

- Together we renewed our countries at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. We are building a new Central Europe. We have recognized the signum temporis. We understood that our friendship and cooperation, and especially our political significance, can be strengthened by cooperation in the Central European region. I am thinking of the Visegrad Group, Tri-Council, Carpathian Europe, Warsaw Parliamentary Summits. The common goal is to strengthen the subjectivity of our countries and the region of Central Europe in the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance by following the principle 'free with free, equal and equal'," believes the former Speaker of the Sejm.

- In the person of Marek Kuchciński Hungary has found a true friend, who apart from his activities in public life proves with his words and deeds that it is indeed worth to look for paths of reconciliation, rapprochement in the whole region divided by conflicts, traumas of the past and that common, Central Europe has a future," said President Kövér.

These words were spoken when Mark Kuchcinski was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary in 2018.

In recent years, Poland and Hungary have become real partners, creating not only their own policies, but also influencing events throughout Europe.
