41st anniversary of the Rzeszów-Ustrzyki agreements

Phe right to freedom, faith and land were the overriding values of the Rzeszow and Augustow Agreements. Today we recall the heroism of Polish farmers and the Polish countryside. The great victory has awakened in us - the inhabitants of Podkarpacie - the sense of dignity as well as faith in our own capabilities and strength. This faith allowed us to continue our struggle against the communist regime through the difficult months of martial law and the years that followed," said Marek Kuchciński during ceremonial celebrations of the 41st anniversary of the Rzeszow-Oustrzyce Accords.

The agreements signed on the nights of 18-19 and 20 February 1981 ended the month-long agricultural strikes in Rzeszów and Ustrzyki Dolne. They were the first to take into account the demands of the rural population and to draw attention to their problems on such a scale. As a result of the strikes, farmers won guarantees of inviolable peasant property with inheritance rights, equal rights for individual farmers with state and cooperative agriculture, and the abolition of restrictions on agricultural land trading.

The celebrations on April 24th in Ustrzyki Dolne started with a mass. After the mass, wreaths and flowers were laid at the commemorative plaque in the church vestibule and at the monument to Polish soldiers who fought for their homeland.
