On the 35th anniversary of the registration of the Independent Students' Union, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland thanks and pays tribute to both the founders and continuators of the idea of creating an independent student movement," Marek Kuchciński, Speaker of the Sejm, read out a resolution adopted by acclamation on February 17.

In the document, the MPs reminded that the Independent Students' Union - the first official students' organization fighting against the communist authorities - was registered on February 17, 1981, after the longest student strikes in Europe, which started in Lodz.

In the name of freedom, truth, and the fight for democracy, as a gesture of opposition to the actions of the communist regime at the time, the activists of the Union of Independent Students printed and distributed leaflets, They organized demonstrations, boycotts and strikes - wrote the MPs in the resolution. As they emphasized, this was the generation of people who did not fear the authorities and believed that communism could fall.

The Independent Students' Association was founded on 22 September 1980 as a result of events and workers' strikes of August 1980, which were the society's opposition to the communist regime in Poland. For a long time the authorities delayed registering the organization - until February 17, 1981.
