First anniversary of the 8th term of the Sejm

The first year of the inaugurated on 12 November 2015 is behind us. VIII term of the Sejm, whose work is led by Speaker Marek Kuchciński. During this period, 29 plenary sessions were held, lasting a total of 78 days. The House passed 189 laws and adopted 145 resolutions. In total, during all sittings, MPs took part in 2,099 votes.

The number of bills and resolutions submitted to the Sejm in the 8th legislative term, which have been assigned a print number, amounts to 338 and 108 respectively. 168 bills were authored by groups of deputies, in 129 cases their legislative proposals were submitted by the Council of Ministers. 11 bills were initiated by the Senate, 7 by parliamentary committees, 16 by groups of at least 100,000 citizens and 7 by the president.

The deputies also worked in parliamentary committees - there were almost 1,400 meetings of committees (standing - 1,356, special - 29 and investigative - 7). Subcommittees, which held a total of 309 meetings, were also in session.

During the sessions of the Sejm, MPs took the floor on the Sejm's rostrum almost 13 thousand times. They also made half a thousand of parliamentary statements.

So far, in the 8th parliamentary term, MPs have submitted 7,727 interpellations to the government - the most to the Minister of Health (1,047), the Minister of Infrastructure and Construction (1,109) and the Minister of Family, Labor and Social Policy (564). There were also 1,243 parliamentary questions. In the first year of the 8th legislative term, at the request of clubs or groups of deputies, the government presented 25 pieces of current information to the Sejm. The most information was presented by the Prime Minister (7), the Minister of Health (4), the Minister of National Education and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (3 each).

Among the examples of international cooperation of the Sejm in the first year of its 8th term one can enumerate, among others, 19 meetings of Speaker Marek Kuchciński with foreign guests (e.g. with the heads of parliaments of Hungary, Ukraine, Georgia and Turkey, the President of the People's Republic of China, the President of Croatia). At the invitation of the Speaker of the Sejm, 8 visits of presidents or other representatives of foreign parliaments to Poland have been organized (e.g. the "Solidarity and Sovereignty" parliamentary meeting of Central and Eastern European countries, the "Carpathian Europe" conferences in Krynica, the official visit of the head of the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina). Parliamentary diplomacy also includes Marek Kuchciński's initiation of a debate on the future of the EU based on the draft declaration Europe of Solidary States as well as involvement in the discussion on strengthening the role of national parliaments. The Speaker of the Sejm has also made 13 trips abroad (e.g. official visit to Hungary, meeting of the heads of parliaments of the Visegrad Group in the Czech Republic, conference of the presidents of the EU parliaments in Luxembourg).

At the end of the first year of the 8th term in the clubs: Law and Justice - 234 MPs, Civic Platform - 133, Kukiz '15 - 36, Nowoczesna - 30, Polish People's Party - 16. Whereas to the circles: European Democrats and Wolni i Solidarni belonged respectively 4 and 3 MPs, and 4 MPs are unattached.

There were 10 cases in which an MEP's mandate expired and was taken over by another person, e.g. MEPs who became a Member of the European Parliament (2), a member of the Monetary Policy Council (1), a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal (1). Two deputies of the 8th term died - Artur Górski and Tomasz Tomczykiewicz.

There are 331 men and 129 women in the 460-member House at the end of the first year of the 8th term.

The average age of an MP of the 8th term is 51 years. The oldest MP is Andrzej Smirnow (78 years old), and the youngest - Lukasz Rzepecki (24 years old).

In the first year of the 8th term of office the Sejm attracted over 121 thousand visitors - in organized groups as well as those who came to visit the Sejm on their own. Additionally, as part of the initiatives aimed at parliamentary education, the building in Wiejska Street was visited by more than 6 thousand people during the Museums' Night and by more than 3 thousand people during the open day on the occasion of National Independence Day.
