The Speaker of the Seimas Marek Kuchcinski met with the Presidents of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania and Verkhovna Rada.
The talks emphasized the importance of security in the region, the growing importance of national parliaments and the need for good neighborly dialogue, as well as support for economic, energy and infrastructure development.
The most important issue from the point of view of our three countries is the security of this part of Europe. The Speaker of the Sejm opposes both the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the violation of human rights in Belarus. He pointed out that the security borders are not coincident with the borders of the European Union, and from this point of view the Eastern Partnership is so important, as well as convincing European capitals and the United States of the importance of Ukraine's sovereignty.
The Speaker of the Sejm noted that the main topic of the May meeting of the Speakers of the Parliaments of Central, Southern, Northern and Eastern Europe in Warsaw will be security. - As national parliaments we have to strengthen democracy in Belarus and Ukraine's sovereignty, we have to propose to the EU instruments that would strengthen the Eastern Partnership. Within the EU, we should develop cooperation between the V4, the Baltic states or between Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden - Kuchciński argued.
The newly elected Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktoras Pranckietis admitted that a new history is beginning in the Lithuanian-Polish relations. When asked by the Speaker of the Seimas what is the reason of Lithuanian authorities' resistance towards naming the towns in Polish language, he assured that works on Polish-language naming in Lithuania are being continued in the Lithuanian Parliament. He added that there is also a possibility to pass the whole education in Polish - starting from kindergarten, ending with university, and also to gain additional points at university for the knowledge of Polish language.
Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Andriy Parubiy thanked for the adoption in October 2016 of a joint resolution for the Seimas and Verkhovna Rada with the "Declaration of Remembrance and Solidarity".
Referring to the detention of the mayor of Przemyśl Robert Choma on the Polish-Ukrainian border, Andriy Parubiy noted that it was a big mistake.
He stressed that when someone tries to divide Poland and Ukraine, we should not give in to provocations, but through a quick reaction show that it will not succeed. He also emphasized that Marshal Kuchciński has been organizing the Carpathian Europe conference for many years, and he wants to work on the development of the region, to create a strategy similar to the Alpine one.
The meetings were held within the framework of the VIII Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Seimas and Senate of the Republic of Poland, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, and the Supreme Council of Ukraine. On the first day of the session, the role of host was played by Marshal of the Senate Stanisław Karczewski.
