38th Anniversary of the Rzeszow and Augustow Agreements

Under the honorary patronage of the Speaker of the Sejm, Marek Kuchcinski, ceremonies were held to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the Rzeszow-Oustrzyce Accords.

The agreements signed on the nights of 18-19 and 20 February 1981 ended the month-long agricultural strikes in Rzeszów and Ustrzyki Dolne. They were the first to take into account the demands of the rural population and to draw attention to their problems on such a scale. As a result of the strikes, farmers won guarantees of inviolable peasant property with inheritance rights, equal rights for individual farmers with state and cooperative agriculture, and the abolition of restrictions on agricultural land trading.

In his letter to the participants of the ceremony and the conference in Rzeszów Marek Kuchciński wrote that freedom is a great good - a good that should be cherished and guarded with all his might. The process of the long march towards freedom includes the farmers' strikes at the turn of 1981/1982 in Ustrzyki Dolne and in Rzeszów, when farmers courageously demanded ownership of the land and respect for the rights to freedom of speech and conscience. They achieved great success, and the Rzeszów-Ustrzyki Agreements were the result of their determination. - This great victory awakened in us - the inhabitants of Podkarpacie - a sense of dignity, as well as faith in our own capabilities and strength. This faith allowed us to continue our struggle against the communist regime through the difficult months of martial law and the years that followed," emphasized the Speaker of the Sejm.
