Polish Thermopylae - the Battle of Wizna

For four days (September 7-10) 1939, several hundred Polish soldiers of Captain Wladyslaw Raginis resisted the German army of several thousand men commanded by General Heinz Guderian. Although the Third Reich was vastly outnumbered, the defenders fought to the end.

It is estimated that German forces numbered 32,000 soldiers and 160-350 tanks (according to some sources, German forces could have numbered as many as 42,000). Referred to as the Polish Thermopylae, the battle was one of the most heroic during World War II. Moreover, it allowed to stop Guderian's army for 2 days, when the Army of Warsaw was formed, consisting of the remnants of Polish troops, who were brought to defend the capital from different parts of the country.
