Law and Justice Party appeals to the government to take action to promote cooperation within the Carpathian region

PiS appeals to the government to pursue the establishment of an international agreement - the Carpathian strategy - covering the countries of the region: Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland. The aim of the agreement would be to support each other in the fight against unemployment and the demographic crisis.

The Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians, known as the Carpathian Convention, proclaimed in 2003 in Kiev, is considered to be the beginning of the concept of the Carpathian strategy. It was signed by the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine. In September 2011, at the conference "Europe of the Carpathians" in Krynica, Poland also signed a special memorandum on the Carpathian strategy. Another initiative was The Carpathian Project, in operation from 2005 to 2008. Its provisions related mainly to tourism, local trade, nature protection, Carpathian road and rail corridors, as well as small energy projects.

PiS MP Marek Kuchcinski said at a conference in the Sejm on Wednesday that PiS is calling for the government to get involved in Central Europe, mainly in the area encompassing the Carpathians. He mentioned in this context Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland.

"The aim of these actions is to strengthen the interaction of these countries so as to better use not only our position in European politics, but also to better support each other in those challenges we face: finding better recipes for the troubles in the labor market or demographic problems," he explained.

The best instrument for this, he argued, would be an interstate agreement, a "Central European, Carpathian strategy."

Marek Kuchcinski was supported by another Law and Justice MP Krzysztof Szczerski. "On Tuesday, the Council of the European Union adopted a document that stresses the importance of macro-regional strategies as added values in the EU," - Krzysztof Szczerski said. He stressed that such agreements help coordinate the activities of countries in a given region so that European funds are spent optimally.

"Poland, as a keystone of the countries in the region, could increase its importance," Krzysztof Szczerski argued, and appealed to the government "not to back away from proposing a Carpathian strategy" because it would serve the national interest.
