The Polish Presidency of the Visegrad Group (V4) came to an end on June 30. However, this does not mean a break in the pursuit of the Foreign Affairs Committee's strategic foreign policy objectives.
During the Hungarian Presidency we will continue to support activities strengthening multilateral cooperation with our partners from the region within the Visegrad Group, Tri-Cities, the Bucharest Nine and through the international conference Carpathian Europe and discussions on the future of Europe. We will also work on reactivating cooperation formats such as the Eastern Partnership and the Weimar Triangle.
During the videoconference of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate of the Czech Republic, the National Assembly of Hungary, the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland and the National Council of the Slovak Republic (June 8 this year), the state of cooperation in the Visegrad Group, summary of the Polish presidency and challenges for the future were discussed. The participants agreed that the format of cooperation within the V4 in the past decades has served the interests of our nations.
As goals for the future of Visegrad cooperation in the field of international policy were agreed on such a field of action as, among others:
- Further support for civil society in Belarus and Russia in the context of growing authoritarian tendencies in these countries
- the desire to accelerate the process of EU enlargement to include the countries of the Western Balkans
- supporting democratization of the countries of the newly formed Trio Association (Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) and other Eastern Partnership countries
- inclusion of the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership countries in the European roaming system
- involving these countries in the debate on the future of Europe
