On November 20th in Markowa, the Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Marek Kuchciński took part in the ceremony of laying the cornerstone of the Ulma Family Museum of Poles Saving Jews in the Podkarpacie Region.
The ceremony began with a Holy Mass presided over by Archbishop Józef Michalik. Afterwards, everyone walked to the square where the museum is being built.
Just before the solemn mass, Marshal of the Podkarpackie Province Władysław Ortyl, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm Marek Kuchciński and members of the Management Board of the Podkarpackie Province laid flowers at the grave of the Ulma family. After the mass, the cornerstone laying act was solemnly signed. The signers included Archbishop Józef Michalik, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm Marek Kuchciński and Marshal of the Podkarpackie Province Władysław Ortyl.
The act of laying, together with the cornerstone, was placed in a special capsule, which was carried to the museum construction site and embedded in the foundations.
Marek Kuchciński, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm, said that the Ulma family is a symbol of all Poles who saved Jews, and the emerging museum will be a great work that we can boast about all over the world.
The Ulma Family Museum is to commemorate not only the family from Markowa, but all Poles in Podkarpacie who rescued and helped Jews during the German occupation. And there were over fifteen hundred of them.
