The 2014 local elections were distinguished by the infamous number of 139,207 invalid votes. This is a lot, and it is the result only from Podkarpackie districts. In the whole country, more than 20% invalid votes were cast. The reason for this was said to be a multi-page election brochure that misled voters.
In the upcoming parliamentary elections (October 25), voters will face a similar multi-page ballot. According to Speaker Marek Kuchcinski of Law and Justice party, this time a similar number of wrong votes can be avoided. The recipe is the Election Protection Corps.
We particularly want to reach out to the residents of those localities with the highest percentage of invalid votes," Kuchciński said.
The Election Protection Corps has 823 shop stewards in the 22nd election district and 800 in the 23rd district, in addition to more than 1,500 PEC members reported by the PiS.
Shop stewards work as volunteers and can help voters who do not know how to cast a valid vote. Of course, they do not have to indicate a particular party. They can also take the initiative themselves and explain the voting rules to someone who is voting for the first time or an elderly person.
These are people who are aware of their rights and responsibilities; they are trained, prepared and experienced. They have substantive and legal knowledge based on the election code. These people are not accidental. Most of them are sympathizers and members of Law and Justice structures in their areas - says Kamila Piech representing 23rd District of the Election Protection Corps.
According to Marek Kuchcinski, if all invalid votes could be eliminated, PiS would gain one additional seat in almost every election commission in the country.
