Archbishop Ignacy Tokarczuk is an icon of the struggle against communism. He was radical and intransigent. Surveilled and persecuted by the secret police, he never gave up in the fight for freedom and truth. The authorities of the time considered the Metropolitan of Przemyśl to be their number three enemy of the Church, after John Paul II and Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski. In the mid-1970s, he predicted the collapse of the communist system and the path of oppressed nations to freedom. He supported Solidarity, the repressed and gave advice to Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. Thanks to him, 220 new parishes were established in the Diocese of Przemyśl.
