Poland is known for its commitment to the principles and values that underpin the EU and its efforts to promote and support democracy, human rights and the rule of law," Marek Kuchciński, Speaker of the Sejm, wrote in a special letter to Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament.
In his letter, the Speaker outlined the broader context of the Polish Sejm's recent actions regarding the appointment of new judges to the Constitutional Tribunal and the ongoing debate on the matter.
„Unfortunately, this issue is usually presented one-dimensionally and without proper context" - Kuchcinski wrote.
The Speaker recalled that the previous government coalition had additionally nominated two judges of the Constitutional Tribunal to replace those whose terms were to expire after the end of the Sejm's term, which was assessed by the current majority as "highly controversial". According to Kuchciński, even the most ardent opponents of recent parliamentary actions admit that those legal solutions were inadequate.
Kuchciński also stressed that no EU or international institutions spoke out on the issue in June.
„Therefore, the same impartiality and restraint in assessing the current situation should be expected. Any disproportion in reactions to legislative activities in Poland (...) could cast doubt on the impartiality and legitimacy of the involvement of international institutions in democratic processes in Poland. It would obviously be a wrong impression, but very undesirable"- emphasized the marshal.
