Speaker Kuchciński in Turkey: Stability of democracy is the foundation of cooperation for us

Parliamentary relations, security, migration crisis, economic development and bilateral relations in the context of cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe and relations with the EU - these are the main topics of the talks between the Speaker of the Sejm and the highest authorities of Turkey.

The visit began with laying a wreath at the Mustafa Kemal Pasha Atatürk Mausoleum. The Speaker was accompanied by the Chairman of the Turkish-Polish Parliamentary Friendship Group Selahattin Minsolmaz.

In the afternoon, the Speaker was received in the parliament building by the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Ismail Kahraman. The subject of the talks was, among others, intensification of the cooperation and exchange of experiences connected with the functioning of both parliaments. The Speaker of the Sejm emphasized that the foundation of the cooperation must be the stability of democracy in both countries. The discussion also focused on the development of infrastructure investments, including roads, and the intensification of people-to-people contacts.

The Speaker laid a bunch of flowers at the site where an explosion occurred in the parliament building during the July military coup.

The meeting between the Speaker of the Sejm Marek Kuchciński and the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was devoted to the strengthening of cooperation among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean Sea, including their relations with the EU. During the discussion on the need to renew the EU, it was agreed that there is a need to develop a new cooperation between European and non-European countries.

In this context the issues of mutual abolition of visa regime and tourist exchange as well as the need for significant intensification of trade exchange between Poland and Turkey were also discussed. It was agreed that the expansion of the road infrastructure, based, among others, on Via Carpatia, would serve this purpose. Security issues were also discussed in the context of armed conflicts on the borders of Turkey and Poland: in Syria and Ukraine.

All interlocutors of the Speaker of the Sejm, during his visit to Ankara, unanimously stressed the importance of the more than 600-year diplomatic relations between our countries, which over time turned into friendship between our nations. They also emphasized that Turkey was the only country that did not recognize the partitions of Poland.

At the end of his visit to Ankara, the Speaker of the Sejm unveiled a memorial plaque dedicated to Polish engineers and aviators who co-created the Turkish military aviation industry during the Second Republic.

On the way back from Ankara the delegation met with the Governor of Istanbul Vasip Sahin, the city authorities with the President of the Istanbul City Council Ahmet Selamet and with Yücel Celikbilek, mayor of the Beykoz district which includes the Polish settlement in Turkey - Adampol. It constitutes a natural bridge between Turks and Poles.

- Thank you for taking care of my compatriots who have lived here for years- Marshal Kuchciński said, addressing the local government authorities of Beykoz. - This place is living proof of the solidarity that exists between our peoples. It is the most important embassy for us in Turkey - he added.

During his visit to Adampol the Speaker of the Seym emphasized the importance of historical, national and family ties connecting the Poles who have lived in Adampol for nearly 175 years. On behalf of the President of the Republic of Poland, the Speaker awarded two couples who celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage with the medal for long-standing marriage. He also laid a wreath on the plaque commemorating Polish insurgents, refugees, soldiers and pastors in the Adampol cemetery and visited the local Polish church.

Marshal Marek Kuchcinski laid flowers at the Ferikoy Catholic Cemetery in Istanbul on the grave of Irena Sokolnicka, which has just been renovated through the efforts of the Embassy, the Consulate of the Republic of Poland and the local Polish community. Irena Sokolnicka, wife of former Piłsudski and the last ambassador of the Second Republic of Poland in Turkey, Michał Sokolnicki, was a person of great merit for the Polish community, supporting Polish refugees and soldiers during World War II and in the postwar period.

History - said the Speaker of the Seimas at a meeting with Istanbul's governor and local authorities. is of great importance for Poles. - When Poland was erased from the map of Europe, the Turkish authorities were still waiting for the MP from Lechistan. We remember that diplomatic relations have been linking Poland and Turkey for over 600 years - he argued. He stressed that this is a good foundation to jointly develop tourism, remove barriers in interpersonal and economic relations, develop infrastructure initiatives linking the countries of the region: from the Aegean and Mediterranean Sea to Scandinavia, plan and implement in the near future large transport links between Central and Eastern Europe and Turkey.
