Budapest's city council on Wednesday backed an initiative to create a memorial dedicated to Polish-Hungarian friendship in the Budafok district in the southwestern part of the capital.
The role played by Lech Kaczynski in establishing a democratic Poland after the fall of communism is undisputed. As is the friendship he nourished toward the Hungarians, for which we remain in his debt to this day. The death of Lech Kaczynski marked an unspeakable loss for the entire European community. Bowing our heads before him, we hereby initiate the erection of a monument to Lech Kaczynski in Budapest - reads an excerpt from the justification for the proposal.
The proposal that a monument to Lech Kaczynski be erected in Budapest was supported by Hungarian President Janos Ader.
I think this is a very good initiative. We all know what tragedy is connected with the person of Lech Kaczynski, how many people died in this tragic accident... Lech Kaczynski's political attitude, his political work deserves this - He said in March, during the Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day.
