On September 19, 1940, during a round-up in the Żoliborz district of Warsaw, Captain Witold Pilecki voluntarily surrendered into the hands of the Germans.
Its goal was to create an underground network in the German death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, called the Union of Military Organizations (Związek Organizacji Wojskowej), and to obtain information passed on by escaped prisoners to the Home Army command.
The organization grew steadily. Together with our friend 59 we managed to get Col. 23, Lt. 24 and new people: 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95. A great man, 44, took care of many of our friends, he also gave them his food, because he himself earned money portraying someone from the authorities and got food for himself for that
- he wrote in the report.
Witold Pilecki is undoubtedly a hero of our times. He escaped from a concentration camp, was active in intelligence services and fought in the Warsaw Uprising. Despite orders from General Anders he never left the country. In May 1948 he was sentenced to death by UB. He was murdered the same month with a shot in the back of the head.
