The extremely pious prince began his rule and the Christianization of Bohemia around 925. According to the Benedictine rule ora et labora He himself grew crops and vines. His life was not all prayers and work. He was a great warrior. In defending the kingdom, he displayed great valor, and his fighting was so spectacular that angels were seen participating in it.
Waclaw's death was the result of a plot by his pagan mother. Lured to a ceremony in the chapel of the castle in Stary Boleslaw, he died at the hands of his brother Boleslaw's soldiers. Miracles were seen at his grave. He was declared a martyr, a saint.
In 1436, the Polish bishop Zbigniew Oleśnicki declared Wenceslas one of the four main patron saints of the Polish Kingdom.
