On January 16, 1864 the Battle of Ilza took place. The victorious clash with the tsarist army was one of the most impressive military successes of the January Uprising.
Success in the battle of Ilza was possible thanks to deception. The insurgent regiment commander Lieutenant Colonel Karol Kalita de Brenzenheim alias Rebajlo (photo) successfully lured the Russians into a trap by capturing the village of Lubienia with one battalion and hiding the second one behind the hills.
