Poland and Lithuania: We emphasize that the current geopolitical situation requires the closest possible bilateral relations

Joint statement

from the meeting of the members of the Polish-Lithuanian Parliamentary Group of the Seimas of the Republic of Poland and the Parliamentary Group for Interparliamentary Contacts from the Seimas and Senate of the Republic of Poland and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in Vilnius on 11 March 2022.

We stress that the current geopolitical situation requires the closest possible bilateral relations between Lithuania and Poland, especially in the fields of security and defence;

We pledge to maintain a constructive and mutually beneficial intensity of parliamentary cooperation;

We recognize the sovereignty of Ukraine, its independence, territorial integrity and the inviolability and territorial integrity of its internationally recognized borders;

We strongly support the granting of EU candidate status to Ukraine and its future full EU membership and encourage all EU member states to do so. We reaffirm our readiness to use all tools of parliamentary diplomacy and provide full assistance to Ukraine in its EU accession. Granting Ukraine candidate status would be an important signal of moral support for the people of Ukraine, who are sparing no effort to defend their homeland and their right to determine their own future;

We strongly condemn the military aggression of the Russian Federation and Belarus against Ukraine and the attempt to overthrow the legally elected Ukrainian government, we strongly condemn the brutal killing of innocent people , bombing and shelling of civilian objects, rape, robbery and other acts of aggressors contrary to the principles of humanity;

We support the decisive actions of the Polish and Lithuanian governments and civil societies in providing all possible humanitarian, military, political, economic and social assistance that Ukraine needs, as well as in providing the necessary aid to Ukrainian war refugees;

We believe and make every effort for international organizations and the international community as a whole to do more and for the killing of innocent people to stop as soon as possible and for the aggressor to bear responsibility for its actions.

Together we are strong
