PiS won by-elections to the Senate with a huge advantage. Zdzisław Pupa won, defeating Mariusz Kawa from the PO-PSL coalition and Kazimierz Ziobra from Solidarna Polska.
After counting the votes from 100 percent of polling stations, Zdzisław Pupa received 61 percent of votes (35,640). In second place was Mariusz Kawa with 21 percent of votes (12 495). Third place was taken by Kazimierz Ziobro with 11 percent (6 494). Kazimierz Ziobro's staff cancelled the election night at the last moment, before the polls closed.
Seven candidates competed for the mandate: Zdzisław Pupa (PiS), Mariusz Kawa (PO-PSL), Kazimierz Ziobro (Solidarna Polska), Ewa Kantor (KWW Ewa Kantor), Ireneusz Dzieszko (KWW Prawica Podkarpacka), Andrzej Marciniec (PJN) and Józef Habrat (Samoobrona).
Elections became necessary when, at the end of May, the former Law and Justice (PiS) senator Władysław Ortyl became marshal of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The change in the marshal's seat was preceded by the dismissal of Mirosław Karapyta, who headed the PO-PSL-SLD coalition in the provincial government. Earlier, the prosecutor's office charged him with seven counts, including five counts of corruption.
