73rd Anniversary of the Crime in Huta Pieniacka

On February 28th, 1944 in the village of Huta Pieniacka over a thousand Poles were murdered. The investigation by the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has proven that the pacification was carried out by Ukrainian volunteers from the 4th SS Police Regiment together with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army's unit and a paramilitary unit consisting of Ukrainian nationalists.

The monument commemorating the crime was destroyed by an explosive charge in January this year. The local community rebuilt it using its own funds, thus showing that good relations between Poles and Ukrainians are possible, and necessary in view of the unstable situation across the eastern border.

Marian Orlikowski, consul of the Republic of Poland in Lviv, emphasized that the evidence indicates that the destruction of the monument was a provocation aimed at dividing our nations.
