135th Anniversary of the Death of Ignacy Łukasiewicz

It is the 135th anniversary of the death of Ignacy Łukasiewicz (1822-1882), a precursor of the oil industry.

He was the first in the world to create the kerosene lamp and oil mines, where he trained John Rockefeller, considered the richest man in history.

A chemist, a pharmacist in the back room of a pharmacy in Lviv created flammable kerosene.

His work was used in hospitals - Łukasiewicz's lamps were used to illuminate rooms during operations. The next stage was street lamps.

He opened the first oil mine in Bóbrka near Krosno.

"It is a great art to be rich, and also a great responsibility," Lukasiewicz said. He founded relief and loan funds, social insurance companies and organizations fighting alcoholism. He financially supported the January Uprising and helped refugees. He was honored by Pope Pius IX with the Order of St. Gregory for his charity work.

He was buried in Zrębin in Chorkówka commune near Krosno. In the same commune, in Bóbrka village, there is also Ignacy Łukasiewicz Museum of Oil Industry.
